Public Health workshop enhances programing of 26th International Papillomavirus Conference
MONTREAL,
Mar. 2, 2010 (Canada NewsWire Group) -- /CNW Telbec/ -- Public health
professionals are for the first time invited to the Public Health
Workshop, a bilingual preconference that will be held July 3 to 4,
2010, at the Palais des congrès de Montréal, as a
complement to the 26th International Papillomavirus Conference. The
initiative, proposed jointly by the Public Health Agency of Canada and
the Institut national de santé publique du
Québec, will highlight the many public health issues
connected with preventing human papillomavirus (HPV) and related
diseases and cancers.
Dr. Marc Steben,
Steering Committee co-chair, elaborates: "The Public Health Workshop
will meet a real need for skills development. We are committed to
making the training as interactive as possible, with a view to
exchanging information and building on the lessons learned, in addition
to the many solutions that have come from HPV-related experiences here
and elsewhere."
In concrete terms,
the program for the Public Health Workshop has four tracks. The first
day will start with screening as the topic addressed. In the afternoon,
discussions among speakers and participants will focus on vaccines and
immunization programs. The second workshop day will begin with a look
at research, surveillance and evaluation issues. Finally, to close the
workshop, a few health promotion and education approaches will be
analysed. The detailed program is now available at www.hpv2010.org/phw.
"The participants
will leave the workshop with practical tools to guide their work and
interesting avenues to explore as they move forward," says Dr. Howard
Njoo, Steering Committee co-chair. "Since world-renowned speakers will
be contributing to the discussions, the meeting will provide an
excellent opportunity for networking with many international
scientists."
The workshop, for
which simultaneous translation will be provided, is aimed at various
public health professionals, from physicians, nurses and program
managers to researchers and epidemiologists. Registration is now open,
at www.hpv2010.org, and a special rate is available until March 30,
2010.

About human
papillomavirus
Human papillomavirus
(HPV) is the most frequent sexually transmitted infection in the world.
It is the source of a number of cancers, including cervical, anal,
mouth, throat, tongue and tonsil cancers. HPV also causes genital warts
very frequently in adolescents and adults, as well as warts on the
vocal cords of babies. The issues related to HPV infection are many.
Highly effective preventive vaccines and very reliable cervical cancer
now exist. However, there is little access to these two prevention
tools in the populations hardest hit by HPV.
